Job Title: Specialized Equipment Operator, Water Bureau
Operates complex motor equipment for Town services and Water Bureau/Sanitary Sewer activities; installs, maintains and repairs water mains, valves, hydrants, and other appurtenances of the water supply system; installs, maintains and repairs sanitary sewer mains and other appurtenances of the sanitary sewer system; performs miscellaneous manual repair and maintenance duties at the pumping stations, sanitary sewer station, and facilities; performs related duties as required. Work is performed under general supervision from the Water Bureau Operations Supervisor or their designee who assigns duties and reviews performance for completeness, conformance to instructions and regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Operates complex motor equipment such as backhoe, front-end loader, flushing vehicle, trucks, tractors, roll-off vehicles, and snow removal equipment. Operates sewer flushing trucks and equipment. Operates various construction and repair tools, including drills, jack hammers, paving breakers, tampers, electric saws, generators and other power equipment as required. Carts roll-off box to a transfer station that disposes of bulk waste. Performs light maintenance of equipment, including washing, checking lights, gauges, fueling and makes minor repairs; exercises care in the operation of all motor equipment and checks vehicles daily. Installs, maintains and repairs water mains, valves, hydrants, curb boxes, and other appurtenances of the water supply system. Installs, maintains, and repairs sanitary sewer mains and other appurtenances of the sanitary sewer system. Performs miscellaneous manual repair and maintenance duties at the pumping stations and facilities, and performs other general maintenance duties such as painting of pumping equipment, station pipe, hydrants, and the exterior and interior of Water Bureau structures. Excavates and backfills trenches; performs digging and heavy lifting work; enters confined spaces upon completing a training program. Works during the hydrant flushing program, at the work time assigned. Stores pipe, fittings and other Water Bureau construction and repair materials. Assists water mechanics in repairs and servicing Water Bureau facilities, equipment and distribution system. Participates in emergency stand-by. May assist in snow, ice, and storm clearance duties. Utilizes safety equipment and follows safety procedures to ensure protection of personnel, equipment, and the general public during maintenance operations. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a high school. Masonry, water and sewer construction experience preferred. Must be physically able to dig trenches and operate complex motor equipment such as backhoe and front-end loader; must pass confined space and safety training; must be able to lift heavy loads of at least seventy-five pounds, and must be able to work in various kinds of weather. Must have a valid New Jersey Driver’s License and a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B with Air Brake Endorsement. Position requires off hours availability to work nights and weekends as situations warrant.
Salary: $20.92 per hour.
