Business Spotlight: The Rey Sol Coffee Story

From Colombia’s Mountains to New Jersey

September 13, 2026

Every cup at Rey Sol Coffee begins long before it reaches New Jersey. It begins in Balboa, Risaralda, Colombia, where Lisimaco Ramirez established Rey Sol Coffee Farms in 1966. The family traces its coffee-growing roots there through six generations, cultivating approximately 500 acres of mountain farmland and building a legacy rooted in craftsmanship and respect for the people behind every bean.

Today, the family-owned company carries that legacy forward at its cafés in Ridgewood and Morristown. Rey Sol serves 100% single-origin microlot Colombian coffee grown on the family farm and roasted fresh in New Jersey three times a week, along with fresh pastries, brunch, lunch and desserts.

The Morristown shop holds special meaning. It sits across from the train station the company’s CEO used to travel to his jobs after arriving in the United States. The café also is undergoing an expansion expected to approximately double its size.

But Rey Sol’s story extends beyond coffee. After an Aug. 10 earthquake devastated Balboa, co-owner Johanna Porras-Ramirez, her husband, Arley Ramirez, and their daughters, Linda and Natalie, organized relief efforts for families in their hometown. Their New Jersey cafés became collection points for tents, tarps, food, blankets and hygiene products. The family also raised funds to ship supplies and worked directly with Balboa’s fire department to identify the homes in greatest need.

Rey Sol Coffee represents small business at its best: preserving family tradition, creating welcoming community spaces and using success to serve others. With every cup, the Ramirez family connects two homes and invites New Jersey to experience the heart and soul of Colombian coffee.
